Why 200 KB is the most common limit
200 KB is a sweet spot for websites: photos look good even on a large screen, and servers don't fill up with heavy files. You'll find this limit on university portals, job applications, government sites, review forms and support tickets.
How to compress an image to 200 KB
- Drop your photos above, up to 40 at a time.
- The 200 KB button is already selected.
- Pick JPG unless the site asks for something else.
- Click Compress to 200 KB and download the result.
How good does a 200 KB photo look?
For a portrait or a document photo, 200 KB is more than enough. Most of the time we hit the target with quality settings alone, without reducing the resolution. You won't see the blockiness and smearing that ordinary editors produce, because the final JPG is encoded with mozjpeg.
If the source is huge, like a 50-megapixel camera shot, the resolution has to come down. We do it carefully and keep the proportions.
| Source image | What usually happens at 200 KB |
|---|---|
| phone portrait, 2-4 MB | same resolution, quality loss barely visible |
| phone scan of a letter-size page | text stays readable, resolution may drop a little |
| camera photo, 15-25 MB | resolution goes down, the photo stays sharp |
| screenshot saved as PNG | saved as JPG, size drops several times over |
Strictly under 200,000 bytes
Some tools round the size, so a 201 KB file looks fine but the site refuses it. We count strictly: 200 KB means no more than 200,000 bytes. If a site counts a kilobyte as 1,024 bytes, its limit is 204,800, so you have margin.
Batch for catalogs and reports
Need to upload lots of photos, say for a job report, a product catalog or a class album? Drop up to 40 at once. Each is compressed to 200 KB, and you can download them all as one ZIP. Each file gets the size added to its name, like photo-200kb.jpg, so you won't mix them up with the originals.
Need smaller or bigger?
For strict forms there's 100 KB; for portals and email, 500 KB and 1 MB. Any other number goes into the Custom size field.

FAQ
How much is 200 KB in MB?
About 0.2 MB. A phone photo is usually 2-6 MB, 10 to 30 times larger.
Will the pixel size change?
Usually not: quality tuning is enough for 200 KB. A very large source will be scaled down.
Can I compress many photos at once?
Yes, up to 40, downloaded as a ZIP.
Is my photo uploaded?
No, compression happens in your browser.
