Where 100 KB limits are common

100 KB is one of the most frequent upload limits. You'll see it on job applications, university admissions, exam registrations, contests, government and visa forms. It's enough for a sharp portrait and even a readable scan of a small document.

How to compress an image to 100 KB

  1. Upload your image above, by dragging it in or with the button.
  2. The 100 KB button is already pressed.
  3. Choose JPG or WebP.
  4. Click Compress. The final size shows in the list.
  5. Download one file or all of them as a ZIP.

Size in KB vs size in pixels

They're different things. 100 KB is the file size. If a site says "at least 600×800 pixels and no more than 100 KB", you have to meet both. We first try to fit the size without touching the resolution, and only scale down if that's impossible. For a portrait, 100 KB is usually enough to keep a large resolution.

Strict counting. For us 100 KB means no more than 100,000 bytes. Sites that count a kilobyte as 1,024 bytes allow up to 102,400, so our file passes everywhere.

Keeping quality high

  • start from the original in your camera roll, not a copy sent through a chat app, which is already compressed;
  • crop away extra background before compressing;
  • for document scans, JPG keeps small text more readable;
  • if the site accepts WebP, it looks a little sharper at the same size.

Visa forms with stricter rules

Online visa forms often combine a size limit with pixel dimensions and a white background, so a merely compressed photo can still fail. For those, prepare the photo in the passport photo tool: the China visa file is 420×560 at 40-120 KB, and the DS-160 file is 600×600 under 240 KB.
