India e-Visa photo requirements

The Indian e-Visa is handled entirely online, so you only need a digital photo, no prints. The site checks it automatically, and the usual problems are a photo that isn't square or a face that isn't centered.

RuleRequirement
Shapesquare, at least 350×350 pixels
FormatJPEG, up to 1 MB
Facefront-facing, centered
Backgroundplain white
Our file600×600 pixels

We crop by your eye line, like US photos: the head takes up about half to two-thirds of the height, with the eyes a little above the middle. That puts your face right in the center.

How to make an Indian e-Visa photo

  1. Remove glasses and keep hair off your face.
  2. Stand by a light wall facing a window. A shadow on one side of the face is a common reason for rejection.
  3. Have someone take the picture from about 1.5 m (5 ft), camera at eye level. Shooting from below distorts the face, and the checks will flag a tilted head.
  4. Upload it and choose India visa (e-Visa).
  5. Download the e-Visa file and upload it on the official site, indianvisaonline.gov.in.

The passport scan

Besides the photo, the form asks for a scan of your passport's photo page, usually as a PDF with a size limit. If you only have a phone picture of the page, turn it into a PDF with scan to PDF, and if the file is too big, compress the PDF. If you need a JPG under a certain size, use compress image to KB.

Beware of lookalike sites

Apply only on the official government site. Many agent websites look official and add hefty service fees on top of the visa fee.

Regular paper visas

Regular visas applied for through a visa application center can have different photo rules from the e-Visa. Check them with the center and pick the matching size from our list.

Why photos get rejected

  • not square, or smaller than 350×350;
  • file over 1 MB;
  • face off center, or too much of the shoulders;
  • shadows, colored background, glasses with glare.

Free preview

Cropping and checks are free with a watermarked preview. The clean file comes in a $6.99 set or with Pro Photo from $2.99 a day.
