China's visa photo is 33×48 mm, not the 35×45 mm used for Schengen or most passports, so photos made for other documents won't fit. The online application form also checks the file's pixel dimensions and weight.

China has widened visa-free and transit visa-free entry for many countries in recent years. Before you prepare a visa application, check the current rules for your passport on the website of the Chinese visa application center or embassy. Study, work and longer stays still need a visa.
How to take a China visa photo
- Stand by a light wall facing a window and take off your glasses.
- Show your forehead and ears if you can; hair shouldn't fall over your eyebrows.
- Upload the photo and choose China visa. The head is sized to 28-33 mm, with the top 3-5 mm from the edge.
- Download the online file and upload it in the visa application form.
- For your appointment, print the 4×6 in sheet with 4 photos. An A4 sheet fits 25.
Why the form rejects photos
- pixel size outside 354-420 × 472-560;
- file under 40 KB or over 120 KB;
- head too small with too much shoulder showing;
- colored or uneven background, shadows.
If the form still complains, run the same photo through the tool again and download a new file. You don't need to reshoot.
Clothing and accessories
Avoid white tops, which blend into the white background. Head coverings are for religious reasons only, with the whole face visible. Remove large earrings or jewelry that reflect light or hide part of your face.
