What a 35×45 ICAO photo is
ICAO is the International Civil Aviation Organization. Its standard defines what passport and visa photos must look like so border machines can read them. A 35×45 mm ICAO photo is accepted across Europe and in many other countries, which makes it the most widely used photo size in the world.
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Size | 35×45 mm (about 1.38×1.77 in) |
| Head | 32-36 mm, 70-80% of the height |
| Above the head | 3-5 mm |
| Background | plain and light: white, light gray or light blue |
| Face | neutral, mouth closed, looking straight ahead |
For this document you can pick one of three backgrounds. If the rules you're following don't specify, use white.
When to choose this option
- your country isn't in the list, but the rules say "35×45 mm, biometric";
- you need a residence permit, ID card or driving license photo abroad;
- you're not sure which of the similar options to pick.
For common cases we have exact presets: Schengen visa, EU passport and the UK, which uses a smaller 29-34 mm head and a gray background. For the US and India, see the 2x2 photo page instead.
How to make a 35×45 photo at home
- Stand by a light wall facing a window and take off your glasses.
- Have someone take the photo from about 1.5 m (5 ft), camera at eye level.
- Upload it, choose Any country 35×45 (ICAO) and a background color.
- Check head size (32-36 mm), lighting and tilt.
- Download a 4×6 in sheet with 6 photos, or an A4 sheet with 20.
Printing without mistakes
The most common 35×45 mistake happens at the printer: the photos get scaled to fit the page and come out at 33×43 mm or so. Always print borderless, without fitting, at 100% scale. Our sheet has the photo size printed along the edge, which makes it easy to check with a ruler.
Check a print with a ruler
Measure one photo: it should be 35 mm wide and 45 mm tall. Then measure the head from chin to the top of the hair: 32-36 mm. If the photo is smaller, the print was scaled; print the sheet again at 100%.
Free preview
Cropping and checks are free with a watermarked preview. Clean files (600 dpi photo, 4×6 and A4 sheets) come in a $6.99 set or with Pro Photo from $2.99 a day.
FAQ
Where are 35×45 mm photos accepted?
Across most of Europe, at Schengen visa centers and for many passports and residence permits. Always check the rules of the country you're applying to.

No. 2×2 in is 51×51 mm and is used for US documents. 35×45 is narrower and taller.

White, unless your rules say otherwise. Light gray and light blue are there for countries that ask for them.
