Where 2x2 photos are used
2×2 inches is the American photo size. You need it for a US passport, US visas and many other US government forms. Our tool has separate presets for the most common cases:

Why you can't just crop a photo square
Cropping a regular photo into a square almost never works. The head ends up too small, the eye line is in the wrong place and the background isn't plain white. How to print 2x2 photos
- Download the 4×6 in sheet: it holds 2 photos side by side with gray cut lines.
- Order a regular 4×6 print online or at a photo kiosk, borderless and at actual size, with no cropping.
- Cut along the gray lines. Measure one photo: it should be exactly 2 inches wide.
A regular 4×6 print usually costs well under a dollar, while many stores charge $15 or more for two passport photos. There's also an A4 PDF with 12 photos for a home printer; print it at 100% scale on glossy or matte photo paper.
Tips for a good shot
- have someone else take the photo from 4-5 ft away, at eye level;
- face a window for even light, and avoid flash;
- wear a top that isn't white so your shoulders don't blend into the background;
- keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed.
