Why convert PNG to JPG
PNG is lossless, and for photos that's overkill: a photo saved as PNG is several times larger than the same photo as JPG, and looks identical. People convert PNG to JPG when:
- a website or application form only accepts JPG;
- a file is over the upload limit as PNG but fits as JPG;
- they need to email a lot of images;
- they're running out of space on a phone or drive.
What happens to transparency
JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas become white. For logos and cut-out images that might not be what you want: keep them as PNG, or choose WebP, which is lighter and keeps transparency.
When to keep PNG
- screenshots with small text: JPG adds faint halos around letters;
- logos, icons and diagrams with flat colors;
- images with a transparent background.
To make a PNG lighter without changing its format, use compress images: PNGs are reduced by color count and stay transparent. For an exact size, like under 200 KB, use compress image to KB.
Screenshots
Screenshots are saved as PNG by default. If one shows a photo or a video frame, as JPG it gets several times smaller with no visible difference. If it shows small text, an app interface or a spreadsheet, compare the results: JPG may add slight halos around letters, so PNG or WebP might be the better choice.
JPG quality
We encode JPGs with mozjpeg at high quality. On photos you won't see a difference from the PNG, and the file size usually drops several times over. Each output keeps the original file name with the new extension.
