How to convert video to WAV
- Drop up to 5 videos: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, up to 2 GB each.
- WAV is already selected. There's no quality setting: WAV is always lossless.
- Click the button and download the files.
When you need WAV specifically
WAV stores audio uncompressed, so it has none of the losses MP3 introduces. That matters when the audio is going to be worked on:
- Editing: Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Audition and other editors cut WAV frame-accurately and don't spend time decoding it.
- Noise reduction and processing: every MP3 re-encode adds artifacts, while WAV survives any chain of effects.
- Transcription and speech recognition: many services and apps work best with WAV, and recognition makes fewer mistakes without compression artifacts.
- Syncing: camera audio and a separate recorder are easier to line up when both are WAV.
What's inside our WAV
16-bit, at the same sample rate as the source video: usually 48,000 Hz for cameras and phones, or 44,100 Hz. The number of channels is kept too. Nothing is resampled without a reason, so the sound is exactly what's in the clip.
How big is a WAV?
About 10 MB per minute of stereo. An hour-long lecture is roughly 600 MB. If size matters more than precision, go with MP3 or FLAC. FLAC is lossless too but about half the size of WAV, and you can pick it in the same tool. If a transcription service only takes MP3, choose 128 kbps: that's plenty for speech.
Why no upload matters here
Video for editing tends to be big: 4K camera footage is easily several gigabytes. Uploading that to someone else's server takes ages. Here the audio is extracted in your browser, which is faster and more reliable. Nothing leaves your machine, so client footage stays with you.
Audio to WAV
You can also upload audio instead of video: MP3, M4A, OGG or FLAC. Note that an MP3 won't gain quality: the WAV keeps exactly what was there, but editing apps will handle it more smoothly.
Several files at once
Drop up to 5 videos at a time. Each gets its own WAV with the same name, and you can download them all as one ZIP. Handy for a set of interview takes or several cameras from one shoot.
Limits
Free: 20 files a day, up to 5 at a time. Pro Audio: no daily limit and up to 50 files at a time, from $1.49 a day.
FAQ
What bit depth and sample rate is the WAV?
16-bit, at the source's sample rate, usually 48,000 or 44,100 Hz.
How big is a WAV file?
About 10 MB per minute of stereo audio.
Why WAV instead of MP3?
WAV is lossless and easy to edit and process. MP3 is smaller, but each re-encode degrades it.
Can I convert MP3 to WAV?
Yes, upload the MP3 and pick WAV. The quality stays at MP3 level, but the format is easier for editing apps.
