How to make a Wi-Fi QR code
- Type the network name exactly as it appears in your router settings, including capital letters and spaces.
- Type the password.
- Choose the security type. It's almost always WPA/WPA2/WPA3; WEP only shows up on very old routers.
- If the network is hidden, tick hidden network.
- Add a caption (the Our Wi-Fi chip fills it in) and download a PNG or PDF.
How guests connect
On an iPhone or Android phone, just open the camera and point it at the code: a prompt to join the network pops up. Some Android phones also have a scanner in the Wi-Fi settings next to the network list. No app needed.
Is it safe?
The password is stored only inside the code itself. We never see it: the code is created right in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Keep in mind that anyone who photographs the code can join. For visitors, set up a separate guest network on your router and keep the main one for your own devices.
Where it's useful
- Cafes and restaurants: on the table or at the counter, next to your menu QR code.
- Vacation rentals and hotels: in a frame by the door, so guests don't message you about the password.
- Offices and meeting rooms: a guest network for visitors.
- Home: friends and family connect on their own, no reading out a long password.
Special characters and hidden networks
If the password contains quotes, semicolons, commas or colons, type it as is: we escape those characters so phones read it correctly. If the network is hidden and you skip the hidden network box, some phones won't find it. Always test the printed code with your own phone.
If you change the password
A Wi-Fi code stores the password inside, so a new password means a new code. It takes a minute: type the new password and download again. A dynamic code won't help here, because the phone connects to the network directly instead of opening a link.
A sign guests can use
A good layout: Our Wi-Fi on top, the code in the middle, and the network name and password in text underneath. That way everyone can connect, whether their camera reads codes or they'd rather type. Print it at postcard size or slip it into a frame. Keep the code at least 1.2 in (3 cm) wide, dark on a light background; for print shops, use SVG or PDF.
